What this guide covers
Color and image detectors answer different questions. A color rule checks sampled pixel values or the proportion of matching pixels in an area. Image matching compares a selected region with a reduced reference pattern. Neither detector understands the meaning of an icon, recognizes an arbitrary object or provides general AI interpretation of the scene.
Set it up
For a solid status indicator, create a color task and choose a point or a small region. Set the target color and tolerance, then test a matching and nonmatching state. For a distinctive visual pattern, choose image matching, supply a reference screenshot and crop the reference to the actual pattern. Select a similarly shaped region in the shared source.
Check the result
A point samples an average around nearby pixels, while region mode considers tolerance and the required percentage. A percentage of zero is deliberately sensitive: any changed or matching pixel can qualify. Anti-aliasing, shadows, video noise and cursor movement can therefore matter. Start with a stable indicator rather than a multicolored animation.
Before you rely on it
Image matching requires consecutive successful matches before an alert and can alert again after the pattern leaves and returns. Similar crop size and aspect ratio improve comparability; a reference with large blank borders does not help identify a tiny icon. The stored reference is reduced locally, so the comparison is a practical visual heuristic rather than forensic image verification.
Troubleshooting
For false matches, remove surrounding decoration, increase the matching threshold or choose a more distinctive reference. For missed matches, inspect scaling, theme, hover state and whether the source icon differs from the captured example. Adjust one factor at a time and repeat the positive and negative tests instead of treating the threshold as a universal accuracy setting.
Product reference
A dark-mode change or browser zoom can alter colors and geometry without representing the status transition you intended. Keep the application theme and arrangement stable during a session. Record the observed result and source context when investigating an alert, and do not describe a color match as proof that a business process or device operation succeeded.
Choose a point or region. A point averages nearby 3 × 3 pixels; a region uses RGB tolerance and a changed-pixel percentage. Set a target color with the color picker or HEX. A percentage of 0 allows any changed or matching pixel to trigger.
